The 1985 design of the kettle with the bird remains one of the most popular Alessi designs. It spawned a "family" of objects. This was Michael Gravess second project with Alessi. The goal was to design a kettle for the North American market. Americans, Alessi told Graves, need a kettle to boil water for instant coffee. The Italians, French, and Spanish drink espresso almost exclusively and therefore do not have a need for a kettle except for the occasional cup of tea. Graves was asked to design a kettle whose body was formed in such a way that it could accept and maintain a large volume of water at its base, nearest the heat source. The handle was not to extend over the pots side, so it would not be exposed to the direct source of the cooking surface. It was only after they solved these functional requirements that they could begin to think about the character of the kettle, the associations it would conjure up in other words, how the aesthetic and functional aspects of design could be brought together as a whole.
